Raphael Moussa Hillebrand
Geboren in Hong Kong, verwurzelt in Deutschland und Westafrika, aufgewachsen in Berlin und ausgebildet durch Hip-Hop: Der Choreograph Raphael Hillebrand nutzt seinen Background, um seine Visionen des HipHop Tanztheater zu verwirklichen. Er begann seine Karriere als Tänzer, nahm anfänglich an zahlreichen B-Boy Battles teil und gewann nationale sowie internationale Battles. Gleichzeitig arbeitete er an Bühnenproduktionen mit - zunächst als Interpret, dann zunehmend in kollektiven Kreationen und heute als Choreograph, Regisseur und Kurator. Durch das Arbeiten auf internationaler Ebene, greift er seinen Instinkt für gesellschaftspolitische Themen und kulturelle Identitäten auf. Raphael gehört zu den wichtigsten choreographischen Vertretern des Goethe-Instituts. Weltweit leitet er regelmäßig Kultur- und Kooperationsprogramme und entwickelt mit lokalen Tänzer_innen verschiedene Kreationen. Mit der Tanztheater-Videoperformance „Gemeinsam Einsam“ tourte er weltweit. Am Freiburger Theater choreografierte er die urbane Fassung von Richard Wagners „Ring“ „Der Rap des Nibelungen“ und konzipierte und leitete anschließend am selbigen Theater das Bühnenstück „volXtanz“, eine Arbeit, die Hip-Hop und Volkstanz vereinte. Seine Stücke werden national und international gezeigt: Er war zu Gast bei der Breakin‘ Convention im Sadler‘s Wells, tourte durch Großbritannien, war am Théâtre national de Chaillot, bei CND Pantin, am HAU Berlin, am Théâtre de l‘Archipel Perpignan, um nur einige zu nennen. Als Mitglied der Gruppen Battle Squad und Animatronik ist er ein fester Bestandteil der heutigen Hip-Hop-Community. Im Juni 2014 schloss er sein Masterstudium Choreographie am HZT Berlin ab. Im Anschluss daran tourte er mit der daraus entstandenen Tanztheater-Produktion „POW_2045“ in Kooperation mit dem Goethe-Institut und Waltz Binaire durch Mittelamerika. Als Ideengeber und Gründungsmitglied der weltweit ersten Hip-Hop Partei: Die Urbane. Eine Hip-Hop Partei, setzt er sich u.a. für Dekolonialisierung sowie Empowerment und kulturelle Vielfalt ein. Sein aktuelles Theaterstück, produziert im Ballhaus Naunynstraße "Auf meinen Schultern" hatte im September 2019 Premiere. 2020 wurde er vom Deutschen Tanzpreis für seine herausragenden künstlerische Entwicklung im Tanz geehrt.
Born in Hong Kong to parents of Germany and West Africadescent, raised in Berlin and educated through Hip Hop. Raphael Moussa Hillebrand uses his multifaceted cultural background to realize his vision of Hip Hop Dance theater. He began his career as a dancer, initially participating in numerous B-Boy battles and winning the national Battle of the Year 2006 and the 2vs2 at the IBE in Rotterdam. Simultaneously, Hillebrand worked in stage productions, at first as a performer, later increasingly as a contributor in collective creations, and today as a choreographer, director, and curator.
Since 2005 he regularly worked with the Goethe Institut. Through his extensive work internationally, he cultivated an understanding and instinct for social justice and sensitivity for the complexities of cultural identity. He regularly leads international cultural and cooperation programs and creates dance theater productions with the local dancers. Furthermore, Hillebrand toured together with Sebastien Ramirez their original multimedia dance-theater production TogetherAlone around the world. At the Freiburger Theater, he choreographed »Der Rap des Nibelungen«, an urban adaptation of Richard Wagner’s Ring, then later conceptualized anddirected »volXtanz«, a piece merging hip hop and folk dance. Hillebrand’s work is shown nationally and internationally. As a guest at Breakin’ Convention in Sadler’s Well, he toured through Great Britain, appeared at the HAU Berlin, the Theatre National De Chaillot and the Teatro Capitol in Quito, to name a few.
As an active member of Battle Squad and Animatronik, Hillebrand continues to act as an integral voice in today’s hip hop community.
In June 2014, he attained his master of arts in choreography at HZT Berlin. Hillenbrand toured through Central American with his piece »POW_2045«, a dance theater production that birthed out of his studies. In Germany, Hillebrand currently uses his voice for change through his engagement with the first hip hop political party,»Die Urbane«. As the co-founder and thought contributor of this political party, he focuses his energy on fighting for the arts, panafricanism and a radical change towards solidarity.
